Yearling: The View From Here

The music of Yearling, as well as various other bands of the burgeoning North Carolina indie scene, has been on my radar for the past few months. Naturally, I was thrilled upon hearing about the band's dealings with Tragic Hero Records and the speedy release of their debut, "The View From Here." Yearling's smart, compelling pop/rock music couldn't come at a better time as late springs turns to summer.

While Yearling is still surely a band in its youth with this being their first full-length record, they could certainly teach some of their contemporaries a few things. Instead of aimlessly banging out endless power chords and pop-punk anthems, this quartet has a penchant for captivating guitar lines and intricate instrumentation. Moreover, the spotless vocal stylings of frontman Sid Monen are seemingly tailor-made for the band's mellow pop propensities. Although Sid used to cut his chops with metal act Glass Casket, you can be sure that the motivating force behind his current project is of a far different sort.

Standout tracks like "Kaleidoscope" and the achingly beautiful "Slowdance" are a testament to the band's noteworthy songwriting ability. In fact, the disc has a number of charming little pop/rock cuts. Though rock 'n roll may run through our veins, Yearling is something you can bring home to meet the parents - and that can't be half bad, can it?
