Socratic - Lunch For The Sky (2005)

A while back Drive Thru Records announced a signing that would consist of many new bands. One of those bands happened to be Socratic, who had released an EP titled It’s Getting Late on No Milk Records. It seemed like everyone wanted to know when these bands would release albums, and can they ever be as good as Something Corporate, The Early November, or The Starting Line. After some waiting, well worth it I might add, Socratic returned with their Drive Thru debut Lunch For The Sky.

The first thing I noticed on this album was the dramatic change from It’s Getting Late to Lunch From The Sky. With the addition of piano player, Vinny D’Amico, the band has been able to add many new elements to their music. The first track “Theme to Your Mothers Garden” is a piano driven introduction to the album, which highlights some of the piano abilities of Vinny.

I wouldn’t say this is the most original album in the world because it does rely on some things you have heard in music of the genre before, but the band does seem to bring a welcomed aspect to their music. One track that stands out among the others is “Too Late Too Soon.” This track is the slow track of the album, mostly piano driven, with dual vocals, with the other instruments coming in towards the end of the song. Most of the songs on the album are upbeat with moody edges and seem to have some great hooks. I actually walked around for about two days with “Alexandria as Our Lens” going through my head. This album also is enhanced featuring the making of the album, which is always great when you get bonus features, and it kind of helps you understand what the band were going for this time around.

A couple things that bothered me about the album were I really disliked the way it was mixed as it seemed a little muddy at times. I also disliked “Theme From Your Mother’s Garden” as the introduction. I do however, like the song, I just think it would have been better placed somewhere else; the track seems to drag getting into the actual album.

Overall, I would highly recommend checking this album out. If you enjoy Drive Thru bands and have been waiting for one of their new ones to release a gem this may be the album for you. The band really displays a lot of ability for a debut, and they probably have a bright future ahead of them. Will this make a best album of the year? I have no idea, but I’m sure it will make a Drive Thru top seller list!
