The Sound Of Animals Fighting - We Must Become The Change We Want To See (DVDA) 2007

The Sound of Animals Fighting is mostly known for the artists involved in the group, not just the music. But the music does play a large role in the popularity of this band. After their two releases Tiger And The Duke, and Lover The Lord Have Left Us, The Sound of Animals Fighting took a break for a while. They didn't play any shows, or make any hint of their being a new record being released in the near future. And then one day, a rumor started to spread that the band was going to be playing a set of shows in California. The shows immediately sold out, and shortly after the last performance by The Sound of Animals Fighting, it was reported that there was a camera crew on set and there would be a DVD release of their final performance. After months of waiting, the DVD finally came out, and it is quite possibly the best music DVD out right now.

The concert could be better explained as an extravaganza, because of all the events happening on stage. It's very hard to keep your eyes on one thing at a time. You have painters in the background, three percussionist, usually two vocalists on stage, two guitar players, one bass player, and two interpretive dancers. And on special occassion, the masked men come on stage and walk around the performers, then walk away. So as you can tell, there are already plenty of things going on during the amazing performance by the band. This was expected to be a great release and it was, but there are still a few things that didn't quite sit well with me. I love The Sound of Animals Fighting, but I think that Craig Owens(Chiodos) had a little bit of trouble hamonizing with Anthony Green(Circa Survive) during songs from the album Tiger And The Duke. The one song that happened to stand out the most was Act I: Chasing Suns. But Owens quickly makes up for that when he sings accapella in Un'aria. Skullflower and Horses In The Sky were amazing to be seen performed live, there was so much energy during those songs and all the contributers did exceptionally well.

Anthony Green's vocal range is shown clearly within this video. He does some of the screaming he used to do back when he was the front man of Saosin, and that shows he has not lost any of his touch. He holds his own very well, and could easily steal the spot light on the stage when he is performing. This music DVD, in my opinion, show a message to the viewers. But, the message is very hard to understand if you're watching the DVD just to see a band perform. I think that the band has so many different things going on in one setting, to show that there are so many different styles of artists in the band coming together to form one unified project. You have members of Chiodos, Circa Survive, Finch, RxBandits and more. So maybe thats how they thought they could gain a better understanding from the fans. By showing all of this in their performance, but then again I could be overanalyzing this completely. And maybe they just wanted to do something different with their show to keep the audience focused on them. Well either way, thats how I will look at it when I watch this DVD for a second and/or third time around.

If you are a fan of The Sound of Animals Fighting, then this is a must have for you, because you'll never get the opportunity to see this footage again. Anthony Green said it himself in the movie; 'You are the last ones to ever see this.' If you're not so big into The Sound of Animals Fighting, or you never listened to them and considered picking this DVD up, don't do it. I suggest you listen to some of the songs off of their myspace first or pick up their re-issued Tiger And The Duke album first. If you bought this DVD first, you would just find it to be noise and not know what is going on before your eyes. Or in the worst case, you might have a seizure from all the flashing lights around.
