It's been a tough few years for Hawthorne Heights as they are set to release their third album. After tough legal battles, a death of a bandmate from a drug combination, the band is releasing the record on Victory Records to complete their contract which requires two more albums. Fragile Future will released on August 5, 2008.
Out of 21 songs written for the record, 12 show up including a finished demo that showed up on their MySpace by the name of "Come Back Home." Produced by Howard Benson (Daughtry, Hoobastank, Papa Roach, Seether, Three Days Grace), the album twists rock elements against captivating melodies. Opening with "The Business of Paper Stars," the song details about learning from what you've seen. "It's easy to forget who you are/ In this business of paper stars," read the chorus lyrics, putting an easy aim at labels and the music industry. They're declaring they know who they are and they're not compromising themselves.
Aside rock jams and emo vocal lines, Hawthorne Heights add a song about the loss of their bandmate, Casey Calvert. "Four Become One" shows the pain the band felt losing their friend. They're remembering the laughs shared and pictures that everyone can see. Understanding the story of the death, it's easy to get choked up or get goosebumps while listening to the song. "And you will live on/ Our hearts will beat stronger/ As we remain as one/ We will last just a little while longer/ And as we pull ourselves together/ We can help but be torn apart" the song opens. They let Casey know they will remain a band as if it were day one.
Despite the colorful rock licks, the melodies and lyrics are deep and meaningful and the lead singer delivers them with passion. "Rescue Me," the second track, is a plea to be helped and wanting to live. It' a song of slowly letting go but asking for guidance, wanting to breathe again.
"Disaster" is one of the gems on the record. A rock ballad, he sings of the year not happening the way as planned. "Pick up the pieces and/ Make me understand/ Why we can't move any faster," plays the chorus before claiming all the plans were broke and the year was a disaster.
