Gallows - Orchestra Of Wolves

The Gallows are easily the best punk band to come out of the UK in years. After hitting the shelves in 2005, Orchestra Of Wolves has been released to the U.S. under Epitaph records. These guys mix a blend of hardcore and the punk that is real punk and not that commercial bullshit. Just to give you a small idea of their sound, imagine Black Flag collaborating with Rise Against. They hate as much as they love and the fan go crazy over them.
The Gallows are not going to be one of those bands that disappear after a summer of fame. These guys are hardcore and will be sticking around for quite some time. They are here to make music and money and that is fine by me. If you are a fan of Minor Threat, Black Flag, the Bronx or are just looking for something a little harder in the punk genre, the Gallows is the band for you. If you want to hear some true modern day punk rock that does not suck, then get out and grab Orchestra Of Wolves and thank me later.

Lower Definition - The Greatest Of All Lost Arts

As a misnomer to their sound, San Diego’s LOWER DEFINITION are anything but low key. Their songs’ soaring melodies and vocal approach mesh power and catchiness that recall FAITH NO MORE and GLASSJAW in their prime. Like the aforementioned groups, LOWER DEFINITION has a driving aggression that is more technically adept at distortion and multiplied fired riffs. Just wrapping up in the studio with acclaimed producer Kris Crummet (DROP DEAD, GORGEOUS, KADDISFLY, DANCE GAVIN DANCE), the band are primed to release their full-length debut for Ferret Music, The Greatest Of All Lost Arts. The title comes from the beginning of a long lost Mark Twain quote, and when asked about the meaning and theme, drummer Valentino Arteaga details, “Our fans are honest, and they know what to expect from us. We have to enjoy what we are creating, and we think that enjoyment and quality in music is a lost art.” Arteaga describes the album as a genre-bridging musical mix. “It’s melodic and heavy at the same time, and all of the songs are lyrically related to each other. It’s very much left up to interpretation.”

Take The Crown - Relapse React

The formula for synthesizers and hardcore is tricky. With so many groups spitting out the new synth sound, not many bands have mastered that secret. One group could release a record totally mastering the ability to incorporate keys, and then totally lose it on the next album. Take The Crown uses their keyboard sounds, wisely maintaining an almost effortless balance throughout the album. Before beginning the album, be aware that this record is very different than their previous release, Let the Games Begin. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, though. The action and aggression on this disc is well produced.

Everything on this record seems carefully orchestrated, but some things seemed too clean for the album's overall rough sound. Beau Bokan, lead vocalist for the band, has the right tone when singing alone, but at times it seems too carefully set up. There isn’t much raspy-ness or rough tones in his voice and it may seem a bit too pop-like. He does sing beautifully, though. Anyone who isn’t too appreciative on screaming or growls but enjoy the rugged guitar melodies should definitely take a listen.

There’s a main focus and theme on this record in that Relapse React deals with taking burdens and losses and rising up to continue with the day. “Somewhere Waiting” is a compassionate ballad where the light melodies and the softly elongated vocals create a symphonic atmosphere. The repetition of the lyrics, “When you’ve lost it all, time will tell these stories,” and, “I won’t forget the night,” show the will to carry on, and you feel it when you hear it.

Don’t think that it’s all soft harmonies and sad, emotional lyrics. “La Resistance” is exactly what is says, a revolution. The song's core is in the confusion of the guitars and keyboard. Their loopy melody gives off a feeling of a struggle. If there is anything Take The Crown has enough of, it’s catchy chants. The ending of “La Resistance” is actually very climactic thanks to the chants of, “If you stand for nothing, then you’ll fall for everything.”

The beauty behind the album lies in the ability to sound soft and melodic or loud and choppy with a flip of the next track button. Relapse React is a simple album with plenty of key components. For a debut album, Take The Crown has their work cut out for them. With plenty of touring time and band upgrades which come with their experience, I expect their sophomore record to contain more energy than what is on this album. With a bit more aggression in the vocals and some more advanced guitar work, this band could easily gain a lot more fans.
